How To Renew Your Driver’s Licence After 80 In Ontario

In Ontario, drivers that are 80 years of age or older are required to renew their Ontario driver’s licence every two years in order to drive legally. If you are in this age group and your driver’s licence is about to expire, you will also be required to complete a Senior Driver Group Education Session and vision test before you can receive your new driver’s licence. Luckily, Ontario’s Ministry Of Transportation (MTO) has provided much needed information for seniors to help them refresh their driving knowledge so that they can successfully renew their driver's licence. In this blog we will outline the steps that you will need to take in order to renew your driver’s licence, along with including important MTO links that will help you prepare for your test. 

Step 1: Receive A Renewal Application

Before your driver’s licence expires, you will receive the following in the mail:

The renewal application form and letter will arrive in the mail up to 90 days before your licence expires. 

Step 2: Watch The Educational Video

Before you attend your driver’s licence renewal session, be sure to do the following:

Step 3: Book Your Appointment

After you have received the renewal application form and letter, you must attend a Senior Driver Group Education session.

To book this appointment you will have to do the following: 

  • Call 1-800-396-4233 (toll free) or 416-235-3579 (in the Greater Toronto Area).

  • Provide your driver’s licence number.

  • Notify them of any language barriers.

  • Tell them if you require any additional accommodations, such as a sign-language interpreter.

When you call the above number, you will get the date, time, and location of your session. These sessions are held at various locations across Ontario. 

You may also reschedule your appointment if you can't attend the day of your session. In the case that you are out of province when your licence expires, you may renew your driver’s licence up to 180 days before the expiry date. 

If the next available appointment is after your driver’s licence expires, you may be eligible to get a temporary driver’s licence extension from the MTO. 

Step 4: Attend A Senior Driver Group Education Session

Make sure to bring the following to the renewal session:

  • Your driver’s licence, or a temporary driver’s licence.

  • The licence renewal application, if available.

  • Any corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses that you use for driving. If you use reading glasses, bring them as well. 

  • Hearing aids, if needed.

  • Water, since it may not be available at every location.

  • Snacks for those with dietary requirements, such as diabetics that need to regulate their blood sugar levels. 

Once you have arrived for your session, you will be required to do the following: 

  • Watch the educational video if you were not able to do so before. 

  • Complete a vision assessment.

  • Complete a five-minute in-class screening exercise.

After the session, you may need to do the following:

  • Pay a $36 renewal fee at a ServiceOntario location to renew your driver’s licence.

You may also be asked to complete one or more of the following before renewing your driver’s licence:

  • Successfully pass a road test.

  • Complete a follow up with your doctor and submit any necessary medical information.

  • Provide additional vision information from a doctor or optometrist

This will depend on how well you performed on the in-class screening components and a review of your driving record. If additional medical information is required, you will be notified by mail. There will also be a driver improvement counsellor at the group education session who will tell you the next steps to take. It is important to note here that these steps are put in place to ensure that your senior driver’s licence reflects your current capabilities and identifies any issues.

Step 5: Receive Your New Driver’s Licence

After you have successfully completed the above mentioned requirements, you may renew your licence online, or if necessary, visit s ServiceOntario location. If you renew your driver’s licence at ServiceOntario, you may be required to bring original identification that shows your legal name, date of birth and signature if your licence has already expired.
